“Restore from backup” means that you restore iPhone data from an iTunes backup, an iCloud backup or a backup made by another iOS backup tool. You download previously saved data and load it again onto your phone.

Follow these steps to manually back up your iOS device using iTunes.

  • Open iTunes.
  • Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed and running before attempting to update, backup, or restore.
  • Connect the device to a computer.
  • Choose iPhone, iPad or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes in the Devices section.
  • Select the Summary tab. Uncheck Encrypt iPhone backup. If you forget your password, iTunes will never restore a backup.
  • Click Back up now.

How to restore from a backup?

There are 3 main ways to restore from a backup:

  • Restore from iTunes backup.
  • Restore from iCloud backup.

Restore from backup using iTunes / iCloud

Restoring from a backup using official Apple tools – iTunes or iCloud – is a fairly simple process. To do this, follow the Apple instructions on their website:

Transfer content from your previous iOS device to the new iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

Remember, however, that you need to restore the entire backup using iTunes and iCloud. The backup cannot be partially restored and the data currently on the device should be replaced. It’s just the way it is. In addition, iTunes can only restore backups created using iTunes, and similarly, iCloud can restore backups from iCloud. In addition, you cannot preview data in a backup before you restore it. You don’t really have many options; Apple products are very closed systems.
